Hypnosis and Brain Waves Patterns
When an Electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to measure brain wave patterns, basically it will record four different patterns. As these patterns relate to the definition of hypnosis in a scientific manner, the following is generally accepted as an explanation of each:

Beta Waves– awake……..conscious
(14-28 cycles per second)
The wide awake state; a faster oscillation of person who is concentrating on external
Stimuli. It is in this pattern that we act without thinking from the auto-matic
responses of habitual behavior.

Alpha Waves – relax……..light trance to medium
(7-14 cycles per second)
The prominent pattern of a relaxed person whose eyes are closed: when one is reflective or contemplative; the meditative state, light hypnosis or hypnoidal.

Theta Waves – deep
(3-6 cycles per second)
This pattern is referred to as “amnesia” or “somnambulistic” in the language of hypnosis. It is this state that intuitive or extrasensory feelings are more prominent. These waves can also be produced by frustration, extreme anxiety or stress.

Delta – deeper
(1-3 cycles per second)
This pattern is the typical pattern of sleep and also found in young infants. In some people delta waves will be experienced in very deep meditative levels. It is believed this is also the level for “out-of-body experiences”
